This photograph is the mother of 'our' seal pup. She is watching from the sea to check if it's safe for her to return onto the beach to suckle. The pup is fed by the mother on fat rich milk, for three to four weeks. In this time the pup can increase it's birth weight four times over. |
The weight gained in this time can be vital to the survival of the pup, as it acts to insulate the pup, and is a source of energy. After this time the pup is left for longer periods of time on its own, with the mother, watching. Two or three weeks later the pup will venture out to sea to find it's own food. |
